About

The Billion Tree Campaign is a program set up by the United Nations ‘ Environment Program (UNEP) to federate and coordinate tree planting initiatives from all around the world; people, communities, organizations, businesses and industries, civil societies and governments. The objective is to plant at least one billion trees worldwide each year.
The idea was inspired by Professor Wangari Maathai, Nobel Peace Prize laureate for 2004 and champion of tree planting in Africa, who had suggested to a company that was planning on planting a million trees, the following: “that’s great, but what we really need is to plant a billion trees”.
Thanks to their online application form, everyone can participate. Even though over 11 billion trees have been planted since 2007, there’s still a lot more work to be done!

The UNEP

The United Nations’ Environment Program was established in 1972 as the voice of the United Nations for the environment. Its main objectives are to promote, to coordinate, and to advocate the sustainable use of the resources of our planet.

To accomplish this, UNEP works with a wide range of partners: governments, international organizations, UN organs, non-governmental organizations, firms and diverse civil society movements.

In order to achieve the ambitious goals UNEP has set out for itself, it provides its partners with a regular assessment of national and global environmental conditions and trends, and organizes conferences on global issues (endangered species, hazardous waste, biological diversity…) to facilitate the transfer of knowledge and thus raise environmental awareness by making its partner’s actions more efficient.

Forests are reservoirs of biological diversity, are extremely sensible to pollution and yet, are our best defense against global warming. For these reasons UNEP has taken a special interest in the worldwide restoration of the lungs of our planet. It has thus launched the billion-tree campaign program, which regroups and coordinates all kinds of initiatives that will help plant a billion trees worldwide per year.
